Monastic Garden of São João de Tarouca

Tarouca
Description
The Monastic Garden was born of the desire to look at the history, for culture, for agriculture and create an alliance among them developing the local potential.

A monastery, by itself brings history, culture and some mysticism. This one in particular, the Monastery of São João de Tarouca is the oldest monastery of the Cistercian Order and its location, near the Varosa Valley (enchanted) gives it unique and remarkable features.

The Monastic Garden is the re-creation of the garden cultivated once by the monks, and the species of plants and trees chosen were carefully selected so that the reconstruct of the past, looking to the future, were real and unprecedented.

Then, it`s in the fence of the Monastery of São João de Tarouca that this audacious and ambitious project has been growing. This is a project that goes beyond the organic farming, more than that, it is a project aimed to promote religious and rural tourism, the opportunity of the Monastery of tourists and visitors to experience the place, its history in a differentiated way and can reap more than agricultural products, to take culture and take this experience with you.

This "bring culture and experience" is allowed through the store, located in the convent vicinity. A Greenshop, which in addition to selling the cultivated products grown in the garden, sell these same products, as well as other local and regional products. In addition, there is space for craft sale, always in a dynamic that those whoever buys, buys organic, buys culture, buys an experience.

The project is an initiative of Inovterra, Association for Local Development,

The Tarouca Municipality invites you to discover the Varosa Valley.
