Building on the former colony beach, built in the nineteenth century the Foundation Narciso Ferreira, the Melo Mansion is integrated in an urban town (the streets Artur Cunha Araújo, Júlio Graça, Bento Freitas Cabral and Sacadura) that illustrates well the romantic idea of the end of the seaside resort towards the end of the nineteenth century. The bathing expansion takes place on new principles of design. The Melo Mansion assumes its importance as defining an important moment of local history, but also because the set that it is part of is one of the rare examples of a seaside resort.
