AN ACTIVE MUSEUM Based in two former paper mills from the early 19yh century, the Land of Santa Maria Paper Museum is an industrial museum devoted to the history of paper manufacture, from its artisanal phase of “sheet by sheet” production, presented in the 18th century Engenho da Lourença, to the continuous paper production that marks Casa da Máquina’s industrial environment from last century, and to the most recent history of Portugal’s paper industry, through its “From the Forest to Paper” exhibit. Being an active manufacturing industrial space, the central thread of its permanent exhibit is the use of several raw materials in paper manufacture throughout the ages, thus acquainting its audience with the various moments of the manufacturing process, the types of paper produced in Portugal and its multiple applications. Besides this permanent exhibit on paper manufacture, we would like to emphasize the watermark collection and a range of pieces from various paper mills from all over the country.
