José Régio was, throughout his life, a great collector of works of art mostly of a popular nature, and its vast majority belonging to Sacred Art. Christ, ex-votos, irons, religious statuary, and a wide typological range of objects were collected, bought or traded by this great figure of the Portuguese literature in the twentieth century.
After his death, which occurred on 22 December 1969, and after negotiations with his family, the Vila do Conde City Council acquired the poet's house, opening it to the public on 17th September 1975. It is an intimate space, with the functional areas of a normal house, where the only unique space created after his death was the modern painting room, organized by his brother Julio, but according to the Régio wishes.
The office, the bedroom (where he died), the dining room and garden are the key areas of this house. However, all the space are like a mirror that faithfully reflects the personality of the poet, hence the decision not to change any components of this property.
