Whoever visits the village of Salto and will continue there visit until the central area of the village, can´t stay indifferent to the imposing image of the church perched on the Padre Jose Manuel Jorge Street, made out of parallel granite. It is the old parish church of Salto, perhaps the main icon of this town. It is a building of romantic draws, which has undergone some structural remodelling over the years. At the north and south walls of the nave you can see sections of the perfection with which the stones were superimposed on the building.
Moved to the rear of the church, lined up on the boundary of the churchyard landscaped and well cared for, there are four tombs covered with lids, all of them presenting decoration and inscriptions. These are important reminders of the necropolis of medieval times, bear proof of the ancient practice of burying the parishioners in the surrounding churchyard.
Inside there are two statues of Nossa Senhora do Pranto (patron saint) and Beato D. Nuno, the Constable, which, so the history tells, has trained in these lands his army during battles against the Kingdom of Castile.
Location: Montalegre
