The ancient monastery of Vila Nova de Muia – where D. Afonso Henriques was isolated to prepare the “Recontro de Valdevez” (Tourney of Valdevez) – was founded in 1100 by Godinho Fajes de Lanhoso. It was also here that Diogo Bernardes and Friar Agostinho da Cruz, recognized poets from Ponte da Barca, were educated in the sixteenth century. In this same century the gate was placed and, in the eighteenth century, the interior was enriched with a baroque altarpiece. From the romanesque period only some ornaments and part of the main chapel still remain. Both the church and the medieval tower are classified as Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest).
