The House Antero de Quental, property acquired and restored by the City Hall, opened in 2013, served as the residence of the writer between the years 1881 and 1891, having been his last residence in the Continent. During his stay in Vila do Conde, he wrote a significant part of his work, thanks to the quiet, bucolic and inspiring environment our land have provided to him.
This equipment aims to collect and disseminate information about Antero de Quental and the cultural generation of which was leader: Generation of 70. At this group belonged names of Portuguese artists and Vila do Conde biography is inscribed here: Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queiroz, Guerra Junqueiro, Augusto Soromenho, among others. These thinkers and men of letters have influenced the entire twentieth century culture Portuguese and are still, in the twenty-first century, to serve as a reference to philosophers, writers and ideologues and, therefore, it is intended that this become a living pole of Portuguese culture.
The House also welcome the “Anterianos” Studies Centre, association created in 1994, being founding partners and members of the Managing Bodies, Dr. Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins and Dr. Ana Maria Almeida Martins. The house also offers a small workroom for scholars who will allow, in a short term, to consult paper documents available in the Library.
