It was with the meritorious José Manuel Lebrão, a native of the parish of Sopo, that in 1935, the new Hospital da Misericórdia of Cerveira emerged. It’s a beautiful building in neo-Gothic style. Its construction will started in 1926 and completed three years later, when it was delivered to the Table, at that time directed the destinies of the Santa Casa.
From the architectural point of view this is a building of great aesthetic quality. This is reflected mainly in granite tilled that fills an entire facade, marked by a succession of windows in the gables that mark the platband and access to the portico steps, supported by twin columns. This is, interiorly, decorated with two panels of tiles of the Sacavém’s Factory and representing the Ecce Homo, the patron of the Santa Casa de Vila Nova de Cerveira and a female figure that seems to be the Queen Leonor. Anyway, the responsible for the project showed that well knew the revivalist movement, which in the north of the country produced some good works of Portuguese Romanesque architecture.
Currently, in this building works a private clinic.
