The historical centre of S. João da Pesqueira houses the Chapel of Misericórdia, boasting a Baroque façade and 18 th century glazed tiles, houses in its interior two interesting figures of Rainha Santa Isabel and Senhora dos Remédios. The chapel, once used as the private chapel of the Távora family, is an extension of the modest house of that prestigious family (D. Luís Álvares de Távora, the Lord of the town) who offered it to the local charity.
The chapel stands next to the Távora manor house, a family to whom the king donated the town of S. João da Pesqueira in the 14 th century. The manor house has two floors and is located on the left side of the church. The house has a rectangular regular and simple plan, and horizontal volumes; the roof has three gables.
On the ground floor, note the 3 doors with salient cornices and shell-shaped ornaments at its centre, and the door frames decorated with small volutes. In the square, you can also admire the arch topped by the Torre do Relógio and Arcada or archways (18 th century), once used as the marketplace.
