The estuary of the River Minho , located in North West Continental Portugal and adjoins the village of Caminha , shape border with the region of Galicia , in neighboring Spain .
The junction of the rivers Minho and Coura , shortly before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean , together with the climatic characteristics of the region , a strong Atlantic influence , enable the maintenance of a diversity of habitats that attract large numbers of species .
The otter is an animal that lives at this location, such as salmon. Also noteworthy is a great diversity of birds , among them the egrets , herons , sandpipers , cormorants , sandpipers , doves starfish , several types of ducks and gulls .
For its environmental importance , this area is protected , being ranked simultaneously: Special Protection Area for Birds, Site of Community Importance ( thus integrating a European network of areas of interest for nature conservation , Natura 2000 ) .
The conditions of this area also attracted the man throughout the ages . Reached our days very peculiar vessels such as bowls and carochos , still used by local fishing communities , ranging coexisting recreational craft .
