The history of “Colonial War Museum” started being outlined during the academic year 1989/90, when thirty students from various parishes of the municipalities of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Barcelos and Braga altogether, took part in a educational project called: "The Colonial War, a story to be told".
Various documents emerged such as cases of death and injuries, correspondence, business records, personal diaries, social action and psychological journals, reports and confidential matters, objects of art, photographs, bibliographies, religious objects, uniforms and weapons, in a way, a wealth of sources that allowed, among other things, allowed organizing an exhibition and rebuild the "itinerary" of the Portuguese colonial war soldier.
The Museum is managed by the collection, preservation and advertising of sources and studies, technical renovation of the permanent exhibition, a documentation centre and the expansion of new studies in the region.
