Clock Tower - Penela da Beira

Penedono
Description

Dates from 1905

A stone tower, with a pyramidal roof, entirely made of granite.

Currently the clock works mechanically, but the original clock still remains, which is essentially made by sprocket wheels that fit together. For it to work, it had to be wound with a winding handle, and for 5 days it would tell the time without any error. To this end, two granite weights with hundreds of pounds were raised, which would slide down as the clock would wind out.

The interior is accessed by an iron stair case.

It works as an excellent belvedere, and from there one can see the lands below and above the Douro.
