The “Castro of Aldeia Nova” is a fortified settlement from the Iron Age, located on a slope to the river Douro. It was thought that it was also used during Roman times as a passageway, because several roman tombstones were discovered in the chapel of S. João, which is 1500 meters from the fortified settlement.
