Brief description: Classified as a national monument on 16 June 1910. It is a military monument, of Romanesque-Gothic style, of an architectural profile with characteristics of the sixteenth century , it is believed to represent a contemporary construction of the new charter, granted the village of Penedono by King Manuel I in 1512. However, it is from the tenth century that it is known the historical facts of the fortification erected on the top of the hill. It is of irregular hexagonal plant consisting of three thick walls. Under the main tower, it is preserved the cistern, which is polygonal and has a covered section with vault of cross ogives. There have been born the celebrated Magriço, Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, one of Twelve of England, glorified and immortalized by Camões in the Lusíadas (Canto VI), involved in the struggle for independence.
