The Castelo de Cerveira Doorway has the shield of king D. Dinis. D. Dinis ordered this Castle to be built in 1319. At this time the defense of the border was essential. The treaty of Alcanices was signed in 1279 and had fixed the boundary line. However, it was necessary to defend the main villages and the passage ways. Barbican Door: the castle as a whole was not the work of a single moment, what means that it was improved in terms of military efficacy. One of these examples is this barbican gate: when a lower second line wall was built, it was also created a winding cranked access path. The objective was to delay any assault, even on horse, trapping the attacking army between the two doors, exposed to the shots coming from both the walls and towers.
