The Casa do Douro was founded in 1932 as Federação Sindical dos Viticultores da Região do Douro (Trade Union Federation of the Douro Wine-Growers). Its headquarters, built in 1944, was designed by the Portuguese architect José Porto and its outer walls are covered with marble. On the inside, it’s worth mentioning a stained glass window painted by Lino António and the great hall, with three crystal, clustershaped chandeliers weighing more than a ton, as well as the very first pombaline boundary stone.
