The origins of this Chapel are completely unknown. Not even know who ordered its construction or when it was built. What is known, is that it was made to honour São João da Fraga. To reach this Chapel, of over than 1100 meters in altitude, you must go through one of the most emblematical routes of Pitons of Júnias, which is just as beautiful as it is steep.
Every year, on the first Sunday after the day of St. John, most of the inhabitants of Pitons of Júnias comply with religious tradition, whose origin is also unknown, to climb right to the top of the mountain in pilgrimage to the Saint who protects the village.
It is of tradition, that at the end of the route, with nearly an hour and a half (about 10 km), the inhabitants celebrate at an oak forest park, by eating snacks, left there beforehand, dancing to the sound of concertinas.
Location: Montalegre
