Besides the Ponte da Cava da Velha, there are still many similar constructions in Castro Laboreiro that deserve a closer look. The Ponte das Cainheiras is one of those, a fine example of the bridges built during the Roman Empire, probably between the 1st and 2nd centuries. It was part of the roman road that headed to Castro Laboreiro and Porto de Cavaleiros, having witnessed the passing of roman legions, traders on their way to markets and even pilgrims throughout the centuries.
Built above the river Cainheiras, its symmetric construction matches the harmony of the surrounding landscape, with yellow hay crops contrasting with the green of the woods.
It’s a fine example of how human made constructions can coexist in such a harmony with the natural landscape!
