According to the local legend of Cabreira Mountain, there was a young and beautiful shepherdess, who used to tend her flock in this mountain. One day, she met a knight and they fell in love. After many days together, the knight had to go and promised her he would come back. Unfortunately, he never came back and the shepherdess cried during days. The woman’s tears formed the Ave River and give this mountain the shepherdess’ name.
A visit to the Cabreira Mountains it's considered mandatory. By foot, bike or car, visitors can enjoy lush landscapes. This Mountain has a natural heritage providing a direct contact with the verdant nature and experiences of extreme delight for anyone who comes to visit.
Cabreira Mountain extends from Vieira do Minho to Cabeceiras de Basto. Talefe, the highest point with about 1262 meters, offers to the visitor breathtaking landscape and sublime panoramic views on mountainous villages, lakes, dams ans Gerês Montain.
Lost in the immensity of this mountain, there are evidences of the Humankind/Mountain millennial dialectic, and with a bit of luck the visitors might also see some of the Cabreira's animal richness. Among the species generally found on this area, there are the rabbit, the red-legged partridge, the wild boar, several bird species and occasionally some birds of prey.
Cabreira Mountain offers the opportunity to practice outdoors activities and enjoy the peaceful scener of the mountains.
However, if you want to get to know Cabreira Mountain, the best way is to walk along one of the pedestrian trails. Like that visitors can contact with the flora, fauna and manmade heritage, such as wolf trap ans sheep keepers' cottages made in between the 16th and 18th centuries.
