The most popular of the bridges over the Douro River was inaugurated on October 31st of 1886 by the monarch who baptized it. Its project owes to Eng. Théophile Seyrig who had already collaborated with Eiffel in the construction of Maria Pia Bridge. Its structure, true iron filigree, supports two platforms united by an arch. It was recently adapted to the metro circulation in the upper platform, while the lower platform keeps its road function. Crossing it on foot is an unforgettable experience.
