On Monday Pascoela of the Bom Jesus de Fao, on the left bank of Cávado, is a pilgrimage to ancestral tradition. The devotion to the Passion of Christ met huge developments after the Council of Trent, knowing the diocese of Braga numerous churches and temples dedicated to Lord of Bom Jesus. The devotion to the Lord of Fao began in the eighteenth century, after the discovery of an image of Christ crucified, in the previous century, near the river, which was missing an arm.
Oral tradition indicates that after this finding, a woman of this parish have lit the fire with firewood in the meantime had collected from the beach and had found that one of the sticks was not devoured by the flames of fire. Once removed from the heat, found that this stick was shaped like an arm then associating this member to the image of Christ found however. Some documents indicate the existence of a chapel at this precise place in the seventeenth century, however the construction of the current church took place between 1710 and 1724.
Deployed in a spacious churchyard surrounded a wall garrisoned by pilasters topped by 32 granite spheres, this temple is part of a broad mall also composed of a bandstand, a cruise, and a fountain. Shaped plant with a Latin cross, has a main facade consists of a Renaissance portico which overlaps one big window in granite. The tower Campanaria sweetened the chancel behind the temple, was built around 1730 The Image of Bom Jesus - Senhor dos Passos - is in the dressing room of the chancel, transept rising in the altar of the Senhor da Agonia – or Aflitos – and Nossa Senhora das Angústias
The main festival, organized by a committee of parties entirely independent of the pastor of Fao, which bear the expenses thanks to the grant of authority and made public collection takes place on Sunday Pascoela later joining the procession of the Lord of the Sick in the second Thursday. With a very extensive program of festivities, is included in the filling of a festival fanfares, marches and processions, as well as other attractions.
The religious solemnities boil down to the mass party procession on Sunday and Monday, flocking to this temple every year and countless pilgrims this pilgrimage in fulfillment of promises - kissing the image of the Lord - and merely curious.
