The manufacture of bobbins lace in Vila do Conde dates at least from the sixteenth century, affirming itself, over time, as one of the most significant ex-libris of the city. Although controversial in its origin, the manufacturing technique of the bobbins lace may have been brought to northern Europe by sailors and traders who then had important trade relations with Flanders. Vila do Conde is currently the most important central producer of bilros needlepoint lace in the country, due to the quality of work and the number of people involved. Today, new paths are open. Preserving the past, new materials are used, new applications for house decoration and fashion are sought and contacts are set up with producers of bobbins lace throughout Europe. This ensures the future of the secular art of bobbins lace.
