The project of the river Caima waterside, in the parish of Palmaz, Oliveira de Azeméis intends to preserve the biodiversity and the management of the sustainable water. In this perspective, several actions have been outlined in order to re-qualify the area between the old Caima paper factory and the Areinho dam, giving back the whole area to the local people enjoyment.
The concerns connected to the preservation of the water resources, soil erosion, the protection of endangered species, territory planning and valuing the landscape are also on the origin of the project, which is an investment of EUR 721,000 led by the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis.
The goal of the ongoing intervention is to improve environmental quality, framing the project in the network of «Metropolitan Parks of Porto».
The idea of the Metropolitan Area of Porto is to create conditions for the establishment of places with natural value, cultural and environmental that is based on an ecological structure of intermunicipal and regional dimension.
Within the fulfilment of the “corredor do Caima” project it was signed, between several institutions, a protocol of collaboration for the development of this network.
The area of intervention is located in the parish of Palmaz, a rural parish in Oliveira de Azeméis.
The parish covers an area of 16 hectares and a population of 2037 inhabitants, showing a very reduced population density in comparison with the population of the county.
