Old Trofa Station
The Trofa Railway Station opened in 1875, when the first stretch of the Minho Line, connecting Porto to Braga, an Iberian gauge (large gauge) railway, started operating. In 1883, the first stretch of the Guimarães Line was laid here, connecting Trofa to Vizela, in metre gauge, known as narrow gauge line. At the time, between Trofa and Lousado, this line was incorporated into the wide gauge line.
The arrival of the railway at São Martinho de Bougado was decisive for the development of the area and brought with it a new name: Trofa. The work of the wood processing, milling, metalworking and textile industries, that were set up here in the early 20th century, followed the dispatching schedules of the railway companies. To deal with these, a warehouse and a loading bay with a crane were built. Some of the companies, located close to the station, had small private terminals connected to the lines for loading and unloading freight wagons.
This station closed in 2010, when the Trofa bypass and the new station were opened.
