The Old Square takes today the name of Largo Antero de Quental, honoring the one who was the greatest Portuguese poet of the nineteenth century and one of the greastest ever in Portugal. Antero honored Vila do Conde with his presence for 10 years.
In this square also lived, but very occasionally, Camilo Castelo Branco, one of the greatest Portuguese novelists of the nineteenth century.
