The secular connection of cork with wine, and the extraordinary ability to integrate in the landscape modern architectural projects, were decisive for the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Pritzker Prize, to include the cork in the ageing warehouse of Quinta do Portal. This building of contemporary architecture, where Porto and the Douro wines matured and aged, it is built in steel and concrete and materials such as schist and cork to harmonise with the scenery of the vineyard. For this purpose it was used the cork that covers the upper part of the façade. The project won the award for «Best of Wine Tourism 2011», in the category of Architecture and Landscapes, awarded by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, and the Douro Architecture Award 2010/2011 that aims to encourage good practices of architecture in this landscape classified as UNESCO World Heritage.
