Abraço Trail (Percurso Abraço)

Santo Tirso
Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
It is a circular route departing and arriving in Santo Tirso, near the car park of the Town Hall. Taking the stairs of the Quelha da Pêssega towards the fountain Maria Velha, the trail follows until the fork to S. João do Carvalhinho and Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Going by S. João do Carvalhinho, we pass through the place of Enfermaria in direction to Burgães, reaching S. João do Carvalhinho Chapel which is located at the top of the mountain with the same name. The farms “Campo do Linho”, “Cerdeira”, “Gil” and the several “Alminhas” (Souls in Purgatory), can be seen from here. The S. João do Carvalhinho, whose patron is S. João, is located in a roman settlement from where we can enjoy the view over the Ave Valley, the city of Santo Tirso and the Ramada Urban Park. The trail follows in direction to Santa Cruz where a chapel is located. This XVIII century building has two beautiful images representing S. João and Nossa Senhora (St. John and Our Lady). Next to the chapel there is a fountain where a human head is carved and from which the water flows. The trail follows to Nossa Senhora da Assunção accessing by the Sala de Visitas, in the forest of its name, where stunning vegetation and a leisure place can be enjoyed. The Nossa Senhora da Assunção Basilica was designed by the architect Korrodi under the roman-gothic inspiration and neo-romantic details. It has a greek cross plan, recalling the monumental eastern basilicas. It is located in the Assunção Mountain, with a view over the city of Santo Tirso. From here we go down towards Santo Tirso, passing through Abelha and Lomba places, finding the trail in the previous fork. Located on the left bank of the river Ave, Santo Tirso has, in its history, a direct connection with the Benedictine Monastery, whose foundation dates back to the X century, being now classified as National Monument. The church dates from the XVIII century, being Frei João Torriano the author of the project. The Abade Pedrosa Municipal Museum is setlled on the gallery. The old part of the monastery, where the Escola Profissional Agrícola Conde de S. Bento is installed, is also worth a visit. In the public gardens of Praça 25 de Abril, Parque D. Maria II and Carvalhais it is possible to visit the Museu Internacional de Esculturas ao Ar Livre (The International Museum of Outdoor Sculpture).
