Entering on 31 de Janeiro Street («Bairro Sul») and glancing into the inner alleys of the Assunção or Lapa, one can appreciate the fishing community that, since the 18th century, here it has been concentrating, closer to the sea, more united in the defense of its interests and reinforced in its cultural identity. The need for access to the sea led to the creation of several passageways and to the greatest possible comfort of the dwellings in the vicinity of the ocean. This resulted in narrow, small houses with long backyards, which made it possible to store the long marine instruments.
